Introduction:               As               Healing               Seeker               affirms               her               declaration               that               it               is               safe               to               be               slender,               read               her               exploration               of               the               health               benefits               of               having               a               daily               dose               of               4               tablespoons               of               flax               seed               mixed               with               4               ounces               of               yogurt.

In               addition,               it               pleases               her               taste               buds.

               I               find               there               is               great               power               in               the               affirmation               that               it               is               truly               safe               to               be               slender.

Those               words               really               resonate               with               me               more               than               any               other               weight-loss               affirmations               I               have               ever               heard.
               As               I               reach               toward               my               goal               of               losing               sixty               pounds               prior               to               getting               reconstruction               surgery               in               the               late               fall               of               2011,               I               am               striving               to               make               life               style               changes               that               I               can               happily               and               easily               adopt               into               my               life               rather               than               trying               a               few               short-term               measures               that               could               put               me               on               that               yo-yo               diet               cycle.

In               case               you               are               wondering,               I               am               in               remission               from               breast               cancer               after               having               chemo               and               a               double               mastectomy.

In               other               words,               there               are               no               more               cancer               cells               in               my               body.

I               wish               to               keep               it               that               way.

So               for               the               first               time               in               my               life,               I               am               extra               motivated               to               make               these               changes               to               help               benefit               the               second               half               of               my               life.

I               am               52.
               My               other               very               strong               motivation               is               my               strong               desire               to               not               have               fake               boobs               attached               to               fat.

They               make               you               wait               one               year               after               completing               cancer               treatments               before               they               authorize               you               to               get               reconstruction               surgery.

They               want               to               make               certain               that               the               cancer               does               not               return               that               could               be               hidden               under               those               fake               boobs.

So               I               want               my               body               size               to               be               the               size               it               is               going               to               be               from               now               on               before               I               have               the               fake               boobs               attached.
               Meeting               with               a               Nutritionist               soon
               I               will               be               meeting               with               my               nutritionist               as               soon               as               I               complete               my               last               preventative               radiation               treatment.

As               of               this               morning,               I               have               six               more               sessions               to               go.

Both               my               oncologist               and               my               radiation               oncologist               did               not               want               me               losing               too               much               weight               during               my               treatments.

Without               really               trying,               I               have               lost               20               to               22               pounds               since               being               diagnosed               with               breast               cancer               on               the               7th               of               January               of               2010               depending               on               which               doctor's               scale               I               use.

Chemo               reduced               my               appetite               considerably.

I               generally               only               eat               2               meals               a               day.

During               chemo,               I               didn't               even               manage               that.

So               I               still               have               the               goal               of               losing               an               additional               60               pounds.
               Flax               Seed               mixed               with               Activia               Yogurt
               Given               that,               I               have               implemented               one               life               style               change               that               is               working               really               well               for               me.

Almost               daily,               for               a               late               evening               snack,               I               am               mixing               four               tablespoons               of               flax               seed               with               Activia               Yogurt               or               some               generic               version               of               Activia               Yogurt.

This               was               the               recommendation               of               a               store               clerk               at               a               Greeneville,               TN               store               called               "Health               Barn."               She               stated               that               I               would               have               to               take               10               or               12               flax               seed               oil               capsules               to               get               the               nutritional               benefit               that               I               could               get               in               four               tablespoons               of               flax               seed.

She               eats               it               plain.

When               I               balked               at               that               idea,               she               suggested               I               mix               it               in               with               yogurt               or               cottage               cheese               or               applesauce.

A               friend               of               mine               was               told               to               mix               it               in               with               water               by               one               of               her               doctors.

She               found               that               mixture               to               be               disgusting               to               her               eyes               and               her               taste               buds.

I               would               have               to               agree.

To               me,               the               very               thought               of               that               combination               sounds               bad.

Mixing               it               in               with               yogurt               sounded               the               most               do-able               to               me.

I               have               actually               found               it               to               be               quite               yummy.

I               started               out               with               mixed               berry               yogurt.

I               found               it               to               taste               similar               to               a               mixed               berry               cobbler               with               ice               cream.

I               tried               strawberry               Activia               yogurt               last               night               and               found               that               to               be               delicious               as               well.

I               take               small               nibbles               of               this               mixture               and               can               make               it               last               several               minutes               that               way.
               The               woman               at               the               Health               Barn               and               one               of               her               frequent               customers               felt               like               it               could               really               help               you               lose               weight               as               there               is               such               a               high               fiber               content               in               it.

It               is               also               supposed               to               help               keep               you               more               regular.
               Flax               Seed               Brand
               I               use               Barlean's               Forti-Flax.

It               is               100%               Organic.

I               bought               it               at               the               Health               Barn               from               their               refrigerator               section.

They               told               me               to               keep               it               refrigerated.

It               is               a               16               ounce               container               and               I               don't               recall               it               be               overly               expensive.
               The               front               label               states:               "Pure               &               Natural               Source               of               Omega-3,               Lignans,               Fiber,               Amino               Acids,               Trace               Vitamins               and               Minerals."               The               ingredients               are               "Freshly               cold-milled               100%               organic,               pesticide               and               herbicide               free,               select               flax               seeds."
               The               container               indicates               that               a               serving               size               is               2               tablespoons               at               80               calories.

I               am,               of               course,               using               4               tablespoons               instead.

Since               I               am               not               a               calorie-counter,               that               does               not               scare               me               that               I               am               getting               160               calories               at               a               time               given               the               health               benefits               of               what               I               am               eating.
               One               of               the               things               that               I               want               to               find               out               from               my               appointment               with               the               nutritionist               is               how               to               really               understand               food               labels.

In               any               case,               here               are               the               gritty               details:

               Soluble               Fiber               vs.

Insoluble               Fiber
               Seeing               that               Flax               Seed               had               2               grams               of               Insoluble               Fiber               and               1               gram               of               Soluble               Fiber,               I               had               no               idea               what               that               meant.

I               checked               on-line               to               understand               the               meaning               of               soluble               fiber               vs.

insoluble               fiber.

Healthcastle               Nutrition               Inc.

had               this               to               say:
               "Both               soluble               and               insoluble               fiber               are               undigested.

They               are               therefore               not               absorbed               into               the               bloodstream.

Instead               of               being               used               for               energy,               fiber               is               excreted               from               our               bodies.

Soluble               fiber               forms               a               gel               when               mixed               with               liquid,               while               insoluble               fiber               does               not.

Insoluble               fiber               passes               through               our               intestines               largely               intact."

               They               also               list               a               bunch               of               benefits               and               functions               of               both               conditions               that               sound               ideal.

               Three               strong               benefits               that               they               mentioned               I               will               list               here               for               the               benefit               of               people               in               my               cancer               support               group               and               all               you               out               there               who               would               like               to               keep               from               getting               cancer:

They               indicate               that               the               American               Dietetic               Association               indicates               that               women               50               and               younger               need               25               grams               of               fiber               daily;               whereas,               women               51               and               older               need               21               grams               of               fiber.

On               the               other               hand,               men               50               and               younger               need               38               grams               of               fiber               daily;               whereas,               men               51               and               older               need               30               grams               of               fiber.
               They               also               state               the               following:               "Soluble               fiber               --               found               in               beans,               fruits,               and               more               --               aids               in               satiety               (helping               you               feel               full).

Insoluble               fiber               --               found               in               wheat               bran,               whole               grains,               nuts,               vegetables,               and               other               foods               --               helps               keep               your               digestive               system               regular."

               So               this               is               how               I               will               interpret               what               I               am               learning.

Hopefully,               the               nutritionist               can               help               me               clarify               this               point.

If               I               take               4               tablespoons               of               Barlean's               Forti-Flax               daily,               then               I               should               be               getting               6               grams               out               of               the               30               grams               recommended               for               a               woman               51               and               older.

I               also               will               be               getting               24%               of               the               daily               value               of               fiber.

I               would               interpret               this               to               mean               that               it               might               make               it               less               than               ideal               for               diabetics.

I               am               not               a               diabetic;               however,               I               have               friends               who               are.

That               has               made               me               more               conscious               about               that               fact.
               DietSpotlight               states               the               following:               "Activia               is               touted               as               a               digestion               healing               yogurt               ideal               for               female               intestinal               issues,               but               evidence               simply               does               not               back               this               up.

There               are               also               reported               side               effects               not               listed               on               Activia's               website.

               All               in               all,               this               snack               is               sounding               more               and               more               ideal               as               a               permanent               lifestyle               change.

I               may               check               out               other               yogurts               along               the               way               to               see               if               they               have               one               with               less               sugar.
               Flax               Seed               Benefits
               What               benefits               have               I               noticed?

I               would               have               to               say               that               I               find               that               I               don't               suffer               much               from               constipation               any               more.

That               has               been               a               big               problem               in               the               past.

I               haven't               lost               much               weight               using               it;               however,               I               haven't               gained               any               weight               either.

Since               I               am               eating               more               lately               than               I               have               in               the               past               several               months,               that               is               a               good               thing.
               I               checked               on-line               to               see               what               other               nutritional               benefits               there               are               in               flax               seed.

               My               Conclusion
               I               am               thrilled               to               know               that               I               have               found               a               snack               that               is               not               only               really               good               for               my               health,               but               it               also               benefits               my               taste               buds               as               well.

               I               know               that               there               is               a               theory               that               late               night               snacks               are               NOT               conducive               to               weight               loss.

It               might               make               a               better               breakfast               or               mid-day               snack               instead.

Given               that               my               husband               and               I               stay               up               until               1:00               to               2:00               or               so               in               the
               morning               watching               the               network               shows               we               like               on               our               VCR               (we               are               both               writers               and               spend               most               of               the               day               and               evening               writing)               and               we               are               both               prone               to               eat               during               that               11:00               pm               onward               time               period,               this               would               be               a               healthier               choice               for               me               than               cookies.

So               I               believe,               for               me,               it               will               work               best               to               leave               it               as               my               late-evening               delicious               and               healthy               snack               option.

    About 'liquid nutrition guy'|...definitely run faster with a different nutrition strategy. I'm pretty sure I can squeeze another...category during every discipline: there were guys out there in wetsuits nicer...








                   "Man,               that               Brad               Pitt               has               kept               his               looks               don't               you               think?"               My               wife               asked               aloud               absentmindedly               the               other               day.
                   "I               am               still               in               the               room."               I               said               as               she               disappeared               into               the               screen.
                   I               have               been               a               fitness               buff               my               whole               life               and               I               have               metamorphasized               myself               into               a               variety               of               physiques               over               the               years               from               hulking               body               builder               (okay               I               may               have               just               been               overweight               and               really               strong),               the               marathon               runner               (okay               I               was               still               a               big               man,               but               I               did               finish               four               of               them),               to               mixed               martial               artist               (think               a               leaner               hulking               figure               with               a               resting               heart               rate               of               52),               but               as               I               watched               my               wife               ogle               over               Brad,               I               knew               that               I               would               be               transforming               yet               again.

    Not               because               my               wife               is               superficial               because               she               is               not,               but               rather               I               am               a               bit               of               an               obsessive-compulsive               guy               and               I               like               to               challenge               myself               physically.
                   My               wife               was               watching               television               and               as               I               imagined               waiting               for               the               next               preview               for               Moneyball.

    I               was               already               at               the               computer               looking               for               programs               that               mixed               the               right               fitness               and               nutritional               information               to               help               me               in               my               transformation.

    I               figured               in               this               day               and               age               of               Rich               Uncle               Pennybags               (my               nickname               for               Google)               I               would               have               no               problem.

    Wrong.

    I               had               more               choices               than               I               could               manage.

    There               were               vegan               diets,               liquid               diets,               juice               diets,               and               even               something               called               the               paleo               diet.

    Each               one               of               them               promised               a               lean               physique               and               improved               muscle               development.

    (I               am               not               sure               how               as               I               was               always               under               the               impression               that               muscle               development               was               an               active               process.)
                   Then               I               sought               out               exercise               programs               that               would               lean               me               up.

    There               were               programs               that               wanted               me               to               do               high               frequency               exercise;               some               that               wanted               me               to               do               one               exercise               a               week,               and               others               that               were               based               on               principles               long               since               outdated.

    (Does               anyone               still               lift               rocks               besides               the               Celts?)
                   Finally,               I               came               upon               a               program               that               seemed               to               balance               diet               and               nutrition               in               a               scientific               manner               that               encouraged               my               ah-ha               moment.

    You               know               the               one               with               visible               abdominals               and               developed               musculature               without               being               swollen?

    I               watched               the               promotional               videos               twice.

    Each               time               I               gagged               at               how               narcissistic               the               promoter               was,               yet               each               time               I               was               quelled               by               the               sound               nutritional               and               exercise               advice               that               was               presented.
                   I               felt               a               bit               foolish               as               I               ordered               the               digital               program               that               came               instantly,               but               rather               than               allow               myself               too               much               time               to               analyze               the               sales               tactics               I               just               started               the               program.

    Within               days,               I               began               to               feel               better               and               not               too               long               after               that               I               began               to               develop               the               look               that               I               was               attempting               to               copy.
                   Six               weeks               later,               no               longer               sneak               peaks,               but               full               fledged               commercials               for               Moneyball               came               on.

    Rather               than               ogle,               my               wife               looked               my               way               and               said,               "That               Brad               Pitt               has               got               nothing               on               you."
                   And               a               good               program               like               this               can               work               for               you               if               you               have               a               situation               like               my               ah-ha               moment.

    There's               ample               opportunity               in               the               Sacramento               area               and               surrounding               regions               to               go               out               to               specific               blueberry               farms               that               invite               the               public               to               pay               and               pick               the               blueberries.

    For               example,               there's               Bolster's               Hilltop               Ranch               in               Camino,               an               unincorporated               town               in               El               Dorado               county,               with               a               population               of               about               4,961,               where               customers               must               pick               the               fruit               for               themselves.
                   According               to               Alastair               Bland's               article,               Bolster's               Hilltop               Ranch               in               Camino               consists               of               4               acres               of               fields               that               produce               nine               varieties               of               blueberries.

                   If               you               want               to               learn               about               various               species               of               blueberries               that               grow               in               California,               there               are               three               species               in               the               genus               Vaccinium.

    The               farm's               first               variety               to               ripen               each               season               is               the               duke               blueberry,               according               to               the               article,               Little,               blue,               different               -               Homegrown               -               Green               Guide.

    You               can               see               this               plump               berry               variety               in               late               May.

    It's               Bolster's               "favorite               variety."
                   If               you               want               more               California               blueberries,               there               are               varieties               such               as               the               sharpblue,               Georgia               gem,               marimba,               misty,               Gulf               Coast,               and               Cape               Fear               blueberries.

    Before               you               start               growing               blueberries               in               Sacramento               climate,               find               out               which               blueberries               do               best               in               the               warm,               California               climate.

    Blueberries               are               native               to               North               America.

    Some               varieties               of               blueberries               do               better               in               different,               colder               climates.
                   In               California,               some               people               pay               to               come               and               pick               blueberries               from               certain               farms               that               invite               people               to               pay               and               pick.

    In               June,               Bolster's               Hilltop               Ranch               could               be               full               of               pay-to-pick               customers.

    Other               places               you               can               buy               local               blueberries               are               in               supermarket               and               various               natural               foods               and               whole               foods               stores               in               the               area.
                   To               easily               make               blueberry               jam,               add               two               tablespoons               of               grapefruit               or               apple               pectin               to               a               quart               of               dark               purple               grape               juice               or               a               can               of               grape               juice               concentrate               thinned               with               a               cup               of               water,               add               two               tablespoons               of               lemon               juice,               and               blend               until               the               pectin               is               dissolved.

    For               a               sweeter,               slightly               more               tart               taste,               add               two               tablespoons               of               pomegranate               juice               concentrate.
                   Then               put               a               cup               or               two               of               washed               blueberries               into               that               liquid               and               pour               into               a               large,               covered               jar.

    Keep               it               in               your               refrigerator               to               use               as               jam               or               jelly.

    If               you               don't               want               whole               blueberries,               put               them               in               the               blender               with               the               rest               of               the               liquid               and               liquefy.

    You               can               mix               with               cherries               for               a               mixed               berry               sandwich               spread.

    It               goes               well               with               almond               butter               on               a               sandwich.
                   Interestingly,               with               all               the               health               benefits               to               the               brain               and               bones               that               blueberries               provide,               not               that               many               Americans               buy               a               lot               of               blueberries.

    Most               buy               more               strawberries,               and               then,               some               presumably               dip               the               strawberries               in               chocolate.
                   Per               capita               consumption               in               America               runs               about               12               ounces               of               fresh               berries               per               year.

    Compare               that               figure--a               mere               12               ounces               of               blueberries               averaging               per               person               each               year--not               even               a               pound,               with               the               6.5               pounds               of               strawberries               per               capita               annually,               according               to               the               U.S.

    Department               of               Agriculture.

    But               you               know               not               every               person               is               counted,               for               example,               children               who               don't               buy               fruit               or               older               adults               in               nursing               homes.

    So               its               an               average               figure.
                   A               lot               of               California's               annual               blueberry               production               is               commercial.

    You               have               dog               foods               such               as               Taste               of               the               Wild               brand               that               use               blueberries               in               dry               dog               food               that               has               no               grain.

    Then               there's               all               those               processed               foods               with               a               large               jelly               and               jam               industry.

    Some               people               even               make               their               own               wine               at               home               from               blueberries               and               other               berries,               sometimes               mixing               various               berries               with               grapes.

                   According               to               the               World's               Healthiest               Foods               site,               the               article               posted               there               on               blueberries               notes               that,               "In               laboratory               animal               studies,               researchers               have               found               that               blueberries               help               protect               the               brain               from               oxidative               stress               and               may               reduce               the               effects               of               age-related               conditions               such               as               Alzheimer's               disease               or               dementia.

    Researchers               found               that               diets               rich               in               blueberries               significantly               improved               both               the               learning               capacity               and               motor               skills               of               aging               animals,               making               them               mentally               equivalent               to               much               younger               ones."
                   Should               you               be               eating               a               low-acid               diet               for               healthier               bones?

    Scientific               studies               show               that               there's               too               much               protein               causing               osteoporosis               in               the               USA               and               Europe.

    The               question               is               should               you               be               eating               a               low-acid,               higher               alkaline               diet               for               healthier               bones?

    Scientific               studies               recommend               eating               seven               to               thirteen               of               vegetables               and               some               fruits,               but               more               vegetables               than               fruits.
                   Some               people               are               born               with               a               gene               that               makes               vegetables               taste               bitter               on               the               back               of               their               tongue.

    Others               don't               taste               any               bitter               qualities               of               vegetables.

    Children               usually               will               let               you               know               if               they               are               tasting               bitterness               in               vegetables.

    Those               that               don't               taste               bitterness               in               vegetables               such               as               broccoli,               usually               eat               more               vegetables               without               protesting.
                   The               minerals               in               fruits               and               vegetables               in               more               than               100               studies               showed               improved               bone               mineral               density               in               85               percent               of               cases               studied               compared               to               52               percent               improvement               of               cases               studied               for               persons               taking               calcium               supplements,               according               to               the               article,               "The               Calcium               Myth               -               Natural               Solutions               Vibrant               Health               Balanced               Living,"               by               Michael               Castleman,               published               in               the               August               2009               issue               of               Natural               Solutions               magazine.
                   The               article               notes               the               16               nutrients               needed               for               healthier               bones.

    A               largely               animal-protein               based               diet               is               acidic.

    A               largely               vegetable               and               fruit               diet               is               alkaline.

    That's               the               big               picture--that               a               low               acid               diet               helps               prevent               bone               loss.

    The               article               emphasizes               that               meat               and               dairy               contain               five               to               10               times               more               protein               per               serving               than               fruits               and               vegetables.
                   The               alkaline               materials               from               vegetables               and               fruits               neutralizes               some               of               the               acids               you               get               from               eating               animal               protein.

    When               your               body               has               too               much               acid               from               eating               animal               proteins,               your               body               draws               calcium               from               your               bone               and               dumps               it               into               your               bloodstream.

    That's               how               bone               loss               occurs               from               eating               too               much               animal               protein.
                   Dairy               is               acidic.

    If               you               drink               milk               and               eat               animal               protein,               include               a               lot               more               alkalizing               foods--vegetables               and               fruits.

    Otherwise               your               acidic,               high-protein               diet               will               draw               the               calcium               right               out               of               your               teeth               and               bones,               causing               bone               loss.

    Drinking               milk               does               not               prevent               bone               loss.

    Bone               loss               is               accelerated               by               ingesting               too               much               protein,               and               milk               has               been               called               'liquid               meat.'"

                   Interestingly,               eating               fresh               blueberries               is               not               as               good               as               eating               frozen               or               cooked               blueberries               because               the               oxalates               in               the               fresh               blueberries               may               interfere               with               the               absorption               of               calcium               from               your               body.

    But               frozen               blueberries               don't               have               this               problem.
                   Bone               Loss               Prevention               and               Blueberries

    It's               the               anthocyanidins               in               the               blueberries               that               help               to               recycle               the               rest               of               the               vitamins               in               your               body.

    Anti-inflammatory               properties               of               blueberries               work               to               strengthen               your               blood               vessels.
                   Blackberries               also               are               similar               their               effects.

    But               they               have               those               little               seeds               that               are               harder               on               your               teeth.

    You               can               put               blackberries               in               smoothies.

    Try               a               shake               or               smoothie               in               your               blender               using               locally-grown               and               home-frozen               organic               blueberries,               raspberries,               strawberries,               blackberries,               and               a               banana.
                   Use               a               mixture               of               water               and               pomegranate               or               cherry               juice               for               the               liquid               part               of               the               smoothie               and               toss               in               a               handful               of               raw               almonds.

    What               you're               really               trying               to               do               with               berries               is               repair               cell               membranes               and               prevent               bone               loss.
                   Before               you               jump               to               the               conclusion               that               the               studies               were               done               with               rats               and               don't               apply               to               humans,               think               again.

    Blueberries               really               are               good               for               the               human               body,               including               the               brain,               eyes,               and               bones,               in               moderation,               of               course.
                   Just               a               quarter               of               a               cup               serving               will               do               the               job.

    You               don't               need               to               eat               two               cupfuls               of               blueberries               daily.

    That's               too               much               fruit               sugar,               resulting               in               a               rush               of               insulin               into               your               bloodstream.

    Less               is               more.

    Blueberries               also               make               a               great               topping               for               other               foods.

    And               those               small,               wild               blueberries               contain               less               sugar               that               the               larger               commercial               blueberries               that               taste               so               good.

    So               choose               the               type               of               blueberries               that               work               best               for               your               individual               needs.

                   The               statements               about               blueberries               being               protective               for               your               brain               and               bones               are               true,               but               if               you               look               at               the               studies,               they               were               done               on               animals               with               the               opinion               that               if               blueberries               prevent               bone               loss               on               rats,               usually               blueberries               also               will               prevent               bone               loss               with               humans.
                   Blueberries               and               blackberries               not               only               help               prevent               bone               loss               in               animals               (and               hopefully               in               humans               as               well)               but               also               cleanse               your               guts.

    If               you               have               a               choice,               buy               locally-grown               blueberries.
