    Instructions               directed               that               bananas               could               be               "eaten               raw,               either               alone               or               cut               in               slices               with               sugar               and               cream,               or               wine               and               orange               juice.

                   In               the               US,               besides               oranges,               bananas               were               the               only               fruit               that               consumers               could               find               in               smaller               markets               during               winter               time.

    They               became               quite               a               valued               resource.

    A               northern               warlord,               Wu               Chuseng,               was               invited               to               a               banquet               in               Peking               where               bananas               were               served.

    He               ate               one               whole.

    His               host               peeled               a               banana               to               show               him               how               to               eat               one               correctly.

    To               save               face,               Wu               took               another               and               said,               "I               always               eat               them               like               this,"               and               he               ate               another               unpeeled               banana.

    If               bananas               have               a               greenish-gray               appearance,               they               were               refrigerated               before               being               ripe,               and               they               will               not               ripen               properly               even               by               bringing               them               back               to               room               temperature.

    Unripened               bananas               will               have               an               astringent               taste               and               can               be               difficult               to               digest.
                   Once               ripe,               bananas               can               be               stored               in               the               refrigerator,               but               the               skins               will               turn               black.

    Vegetarians               and               vegans               share               one               basic               concern:               getting               enough               protein               and               fatty               acids               in               the               diet.

    Diets               without               meat,               eggs,               cheese,               milk               and               other               dairy               sources               of               protein               must               look               to               vegetable               sources               of               protein.

    Traditionally,               beans               have               been               and               ideal               source               of               protein               for               the               vegetarian               and               vegan               diet.

    I               have               been               exploring               and               creating               some               vegetarian               and               vegan               bean               soup               recipes               and               here               are               some               delicious               bean               soups               that               contain               no               meat               or               dairy               products.

    Hurst's               Hambeens               brand               15               bean               soup               mix               contain               fifteen               different               varieties               of               dried               beans,               peas               and               lentils.

    Each               family               member               has               one               or               two               varieties               of               beans               that               we               don't               care               for;               the               fifteen               bean               blend               makes               those               less               preferred               beans               more               palatable               than               if               they               were               eaten               alone.

    Hurst's               Hambeens               15               bean               soup               contains               dried               chickpeas,               lentils,               kidney               beans,               navy               beans,               turtle               (black)               beans,               butter               beans,               split               peas,               Lima               beans,               pinto               beans               plus               a               variety               of               other               delicious               dried               beans.

    Hambeens               is               an               ideal               bean               soup               mix               for               vegans               and               vegetarians               because               the               seasonings               are               in               a               separate               packet.

    The               beans               can               be               cooked               with               no               meat               broth               at               all.
                   Here               is               my               Vegan               and               Vegetarian               Hurst               Hambeens               15               bean               soup               recipe:
                   Rinse               and               sort               one               package               Hurst's               Hambeens               15               Bean               Soup               mix               (discard               seasonings).

    Soak               overnight               or               use               the               quick               cook               method.

    Bring               beans               to               a               boil,               then               reduce               heat               and               simmer               for               60-70               minutes.

    While               beans               are               simmering,               coarsely               chop:
                   -one               medium               onion
                   -one               pared               and               cleaned               stalk               of               celery
                   -one               pound               of               carrots               (do               not               pare               carrots;               scrub               and               slice               to               preserve               nutrients)
                   -one               cup               fragrant               jasmine               or               basmati               rice               or               wild               rice
                   -four               medium               potatoes               (scrub               potatoes               but               do               not               peel               them;               peeling               potatoes               removes               most               of               the               nutrition)
                   -6-8               fresh               sage               leaves               or               one               teaspoon               of               ground               sage
                   -6-8               fresh               basil               leaves               or               one               teaspoon               dried               basil
                   -one               clove               chopped               garlic,               one               tablespoon               minced               garlic               or               one               teaspoon               garlic               powder
                   -one               teaspoon               coarsely               ground               pepper
                   -several               dashes               of               Bragg's               Liquid               Amino               (natural               essential               amino               salt               substitute               found               in               condiments               or               salad               dressing               section               of               store).
                   -one               tablespoon               of               lemon               juice.

    Lemon               juice               reduces               the               amount               of               salt               needed               in               the               soup.

    This               is               excellent               for               hypertensive               or               high               blood               pressure               patients.
                   -1/4               to               one               half               cup               of               olive               oil,               safflower               oil               or               sunflower               oil.

    Olive               oil               is               highly               recommended               for               cardiac               patients.
                   When               beans               are               finished               cooking,               add               all               ingredients               and               simmer               for               another               forty-five               minutes.

    If               you               wish,               you               can               add               a               15               ounce               can               of               Dei               Fratelli               diced               tomatoes               and               one               cup               of               frozen               corn               kernels.

    Add               these               toward               the               end               of               the               cooking               time.
